route & costs ecuador

The minute we stepped foot in our first town in Ecuador, we loved this country. The traditional clothing, small and friendly people, the incredible nature, good food and great souvenir shopping! We made a map of our route so you can easily see which stops we made.

Arriving in Ecuador by road, we entered the country in Tulcan from where we traveled to our first stop Otavalo. This town is famous for its market but also has some incredible nature surrounding it. After spending a few days here, we continued our trip to Quito. This big city isn't the most beautiful city we've seen, but is worth spending some time.

From Quito we got on a shared taxi to probably our favorite place in Ecuador: Cotopaxi. We slept in Hobbit Houses overlooking the volcano and enjoyed every minute of our stay here. Leaving Cotopaxi, we ended up in Baños. Known for the swing at Casa del Arbol and all the beautiful waterfalls and thermal baths.

Last stop was Cuenca. We only stayed here a short time before crossing the border to Peru.

average daily spendings

In total we spent 14 days in Ecuador, which we think was enough. We didn't travel really fast, spent about 3 days at each place and therefor had enough time to enjoy and see most of it.

In the 14 days we were in Colombia, our average daily spendings come down to 31,85 USD (= € 27,14) p.p.p.d. Keep in mind that traveling with someone else can be cheaper because you can share a room. Unless you don't mind sleeping in dorms, than it even can be cheaper to travel alone.

Within this budget we integrate all costs such as ATM costs. How dit we spent this budget? We travel with night buses, mostly used Uber taxis for smaller distances en walked a lot, we went to cheap restaurants or we cooked ourselves. We do always book a double room with private bathroom.

Hopefully our info is useful to future Ecuador travelers. If you have any questions, don't hesitate and let us know!
