Just a one hour boat trip from Sanur, you can find Bali’s nicest island with white sandy beaches and aqua colored water. The island has a really relaxed atmosphere. People are friendly and happy to see you visiting their island. The beaches are nice and if you are lucky, this is the spot where you can brag about swimming with the giants of the sea: the Manta ray and Mola Mola fish.
From Kuta we took the Perama bus to Sanur beach and from there the ferry to the island of Nusa Lembongan (total costs 175.000 rupiah, booked in advance). We left at 9.30 am and arrived at 12 am at the ‘harbour' of Lembongan island. There is a cheaper option with the local boat which goes 1 time a day at 8 am. But you are likely to share places with a chicken or two. Cost are 100.000 Rupiah p.p. one way and it takes a bit longer.
On both sides of the Beach Huts, you can find nice restaurants. We enjoyed several breakfasts at a really small restaurant on the second floor where an old man and woman are the owners. The banana jaffles are great and cheap.
Next to the Beach huts on the other side, there is a restaurant where they serve a tasteful Spaghetti Carbonara. But they also have a nice variety of Indonesian food and other Western dishes. De prices are fair.
We stayed at the Beach Huts. These apartments are situated right in front of the the spot where the boats enter the beach. A nice place to stay (even thought the walls are paper thin) and you can use the neighbors pool to cool off during the warm days. It is a nice spot to see the boats filled with tourists arriving at the beach and having a laugh at whoever gets wet from falling in the water. A bit nasty, we know, but so much fun.
We booked our accommodation in advance because we weren't sure if that was needed. But we found out that it is not necessary because there are plenty of homestays and guesthouses that you can't find online.
There are several things to do like diving, surfing, snorkeling and getting some sun therapy. And at the end of the day you can enjoy the beautiful sunset and the relaxed atmosphere.
We rented a motorbike for one day (70.000 rupiah, including benzine) and drove around Nusa Lembongan and his little neighbor Nusa Ceningan. Driving around the hotspots can be done in around 4 hours and is nice but not really spectacular. First we drove over the bridge to Nusa Ceningan where you can do some cliff jumping. After that we retuned to Nusa Lembongan to see the nice Dream Beach, which had high waves crushing/collapsing on the beach. Maybe they should change the name to Scream Beach because everybody is screaming because of the high waves. Nearby Dream Beach you can find Devil’s Tear, where the ocean tries to reclaim the land with powerful attacks on the rocks which causes high splashes of water. We continued to Mushroom bay, a nice little enclosed beach with lots of boats.
We spent the rest of our time at the neighbors small infinity pool overlooking the ocean and watch people pass by coming and leaving the island, and we arranged a snorkeling trip for 150.000 rupiah p.p. We were al excited because maybe we would see some Manta rays or giant Mola Mola fishes. To bad for us the current at Mantabay was in the wrong direction and we could not check the box for this bucket list item. The snorkeling however was really nice, we saw nice colorful fishes and a octopus. Well worth our money!
