Kabalana probably doesn't ring a bell or shows up when looking for 'nice places to visit in Sri Lanka'. It is however a great place to visit. It has some nice surfing spots, is a great base to use for visiting Galle or Mirissa and you'll find plenty of the fishermen on stilts here. And you do want to see them!
From Galle, it was an easy and nice drive of 20 kilometers to Kabalana. We had some nice beach views and already saw a lot of sticks sticking out like sunken ship masts out of the water where the famous Sri Lankan Fishermen normally sit on and do their thing.
Along the way, you will pass the Ambalama Hotel (150 meters west from Skinny Beach House). There is an overhanging palmtree on the beach with a swing. Nice place to stop for a while and swing around a bit. Great fun!
After a fantastic stay at the Colombo Hotel by Ceilao Villas, we were really looking forward to our stay at the Kabalana Hotel from the same owners. It is situated conveniently in between historic Galle and the surfers paradise Mirissa. And it did not disappoint us. Their place is really great. It has a luxury villa vibe with a great pool with partly overhanging sun beds. When you arrive, all you want to do is jump into that pool.
At arrival, they helped us with our bags, gave us a nice fruit juice and made us feel at home. The room is bright and clean, the beds are comfy, they have both aircon and a fan, a satellite tv and a great outdoor bathroom but the thing we loved most were the big doors that gave an almost immediate acces to the pool. A real holiday retreat. And the staff is more than friendly. We bought some fruits on the way from Galle to Kabalana and asked for a plate and knife to cut it. No way that we were doing that ourselves. They love to pamper you.
And the food.. They have a small menu but the things they prepare are really delicious. We were big fans of the Roti but the Parota with Dhal Curry and the Srilankan something were really good to, and the prices are fair. All in all, a great stay and a hotel we strongly recommend.

Enjoy the pool and do nothing! But do go out and see the fishermen on stilts. You don’t have to go far, they are almost right in front of the hotel. There are several spots and if you are lucky, the men are already in the water trying to catch some fish. This is mostly during the late afternoon. We went there early in the afternoon and they are willing to get on their sticks, but you have to pay for that. You also have to pay for a photo, even if they are already sitting in the water, but we managed to avoid that by stopping a bit further away and using our zoom lens. They ask 500 to 1.000 Rupee. Don’t pay more than 500, which still is a lot of money!
There are some small stretches of beach nearby the hotel where you can go surfing. They have sunbeds, rent out surfboards and give lessons if needed. From Kabalana, it is easy to visit the Galle Fort which is 20 kilometers to the West. Other places of interest are the famous beach of Weligama from where you can see the little island of Makulu Duuwa and surf city Marissa which is 15 kilometers to the East.
